# Double Drive Time in California: What It Adds to Your Moving Bill

On an hourly move in California, the clock counts the drive between your two addresses twice. Movers call that doubling double drive time. It works on minutes rather than mileage, it sits inside the same hourly total as the loading and the unloading, and nobody adds it as a separate fee at the end of the day. This page is for anyone in Los Angeles or Orange County holding an hourly quote and trying to work out what the drive between two particular addresses is going to cost.

## At a glance

- Double drive time counts the drive between your two addresses twice, while loading and unloading count once each.
- The calculation works on time rather than distance, so a 20-minute drive puts 40 minutes on the hourly clock.
- California applies the doubling to every hourly move, however short the drive is — it sits in the [state rate rules for household movers](https://bhgs.dca.ca.gov/industry/maxratetariff4.pdf), not in any one company's price list.
- Traffic is the part of it you genuinely control, because the identical route at 8am and at 4pm produces two different drives.
- A second trip means a second drive, so sizing the truck and the crew correctly at quote time matters considerably more than route choice does.
- The drive belongs inside the written estimate before move day, and that estimate is the ceiling on what you eventually pay.

## What double drive time in California does to your hours

Your hourly total on a California move is three pieces of clock: loading, driving and unloading. Double drive time counts the middle piece twice and leaves the other two alone.

**Double drive time** is the rule that the drive between your two addresses counts twice inside the hourly total on a California move. **An hourly move** is a job priced on crew time rather than on weight or on a single flat figure, which is how nearly every local move across Los Angeles and Orange County gets written up. The doubling is arithmetic performed on minutes, which means it moves the hours on your bill and never the rate underneath them.

For example, a move whose drive genuinely takes 20 minutes on the morning you do it books 40 minutes of driving, and a drive of 50 minutes books an hour and 40. Loading and unloading account for the majority of most household moves, and they count once regardless.

That difference is worth holding on to when somebody tells you the rule doubles a moving bill. It doubles one slice of the bill. On a job where the crew spends five hours on staircases and hallways and 20 minutes on the freeway, the doubled drive matters considerably less than the packing nobody finished the night before.

## Find your own drive before you book anything

Your drive is a number you can establish in roughly two minutes, and establishing it beats guessing at it.

Open a maps application, enter both addresses, and set the departure time to the particular weekday and hour your move actually begins. Google's own [directions help](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/144339) explains where the Depart at control sits. Take the slower end of whatever range the application offers you, then double it, because that figure is roughly what the drive contributes to your hourly clock.

One adjustment is worth making afterwards. A loaded 24-ft box truck merges more slowly than your car, turns considerably wider, and never takes a yellow light, so allow it a margin over the number on the screen.

Or skip the exercise entirely. Give us both addresses on [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215), and the drive comes back inside a written estimate alongside everything else that decides how many hours your move takes.

## Check the route for closures the week before

Construction and closures rearrange a move-day drive more abruptly than ordinary traffic does, and both of them are published in advance. Caltrans shows live conditions, incidents and roadwork on [QuickMap](https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/), and its [highway information service](https://roads.dot.ca.gov/) lists conditions route by route for anybody who prefers reading them that way.

Check your route twice: once when you book, and once on the evening before the move. A closure announced two weeks ahead is somebody else's problem when you know about it, and an hour of your afternoon when you do not.

Consider a Sunday move that crosses a stretch of freeway closed for paving. The detour looks harmless enough on the map by itself. Doubled on the clock, and multiplied by a crew sitting in the truck while it happens, that detour eats the back half of your afternoon, for a piece of information you could have had for nothing. Your written estimate still caps the bill. What the closure takes is the day.

## The hour you start decides the drive

Start time moves the drive considerably further than route choice does, and in this region the difference is not subtle. Run your own route at 8am and again at 4pm inside a maps application, and the gap between those two answers explains why movers push so hard for early starts. [SoCal511](https://go511.com/) covers the same freeways for the Los Angeles region if you would rather watch the road itself.

An 8am truck also collects the loading dock, the elevator window and a curb that is still half empty. A truck arriving at noon collects the drive near its worst, and then has it doubled.

The crossings are where this becomes visible. A move from [Long Beach](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/long-beach/) to [Irvine](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/irvine/) puts the truck on the 405 through the middle of Orange County, and a run from [Glendale](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/glendale/) south to [Torrance](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/torrance/) crosses most of the basin on the way. Both are unremarkable drives early in the morning, and both are a different job entirely at 4pm.

Distance and drive are not the same measurement, either. Twelve miles of surface streets through central [Los Angeles](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/los-angeles/) can take longer than 20 miles of open freeway, and the doubling works on minutes rather than mileage. The slow twelve therefore costs you more than the quick twenty.

## A second trip is a second drive

A second trip is the most expensive drive-time mistake on a move, and it has nothing to do with the route. It is simply a truck that has to go back for a second load.

**A second trip** is a return run for whatever did not fit on the first one, and it repeats the entire journey in both directions, along with the loading and the unloading at either end. The doubling does not repeat with it — the state's rate rules double the first trip's drive and count later trips at their actual time — but a second trip still buys you a whole extra round journey plus the handling at both ends. Sizing the truck and the crew correctly at quote time is what removes the risk, which is why a serious quote asks so many small questions about your garage.

Three things put a second trip on the table, and every one of them is avoidable.

- Inventory nobody mentioned. The garage, the patio, the shed, a storage unit and the cartons still sitting at a parent's house all consume truck space.
- A stop that was never in the quote. If the day includes a storage unit or a second pickup address, say so before the figure is written rather than on the morning itself.
- Packing that is not finished. Loose belongings ride badly and waste volume, so a half-packed home fills a truck faster than a properly packed one does.

Crew size will not shorten your drive. It shortens everything on either side of the drive, which is generally where the hours accumulate. Our page on [what each extra room adds](https://agmovingservice.com/blog/cost-to-move-by-home-size/) works through the way home size becomes hours.

## Three questions to ask any California mover about drive time

Ask these three questions on the first telephone call, because their answers change your hours rather than your rate.

1. Is the drive counted door to door, or does the clock start when the truck leaves the yard? Door to door is the answer you want, so ask for it in writing on the estimate before you book.
2. Is the doubling being applied to the whole drive? There is no minimum distance in California, so a mover who tells you a short move is exempt from it has the rule wrong, and it is worth knowing that before you compare their hourly figure with anyone else's.
3. Does the drive time go into the written estimate before move day, or arrive at the tailgate afterwards? Ours goes into the estimate, and that estimate is the ceiling on what you pay.

Write the answers down beside each hourly rate you are comparing. Two companies quoting an identical figure per hour can arrive at very different totals once the drive is counted, and an hourly rate on its own conceals exactly that. Our guide to [what a local move costs](https://agmovingservice.com/blog/what-a-local-move-costs-la-oc/) takes the remainder of the clock in order.

## Get the drive into the estimate, then stop thinking about it

Drive time belongs inside the written estimate you agree before move day, never in a conversation at the tailgate afterwards. Whatever it comes to on your move, it is in the written quote before you book rather than on the invoice afterwards.

The structure underneath it is open. A [local move](https://agmovingservice.com/services/local-moving/) is quoted before the day, with the crew scaled to the home and the figure built into the written estimate. Blankets, wrap, tape, floor runners and door shields travel on the truck already. There is no deposit on standard bookings; same-day and last-minute bookings may require one, confirmed with your quote. Our [moving costs](https://agmovingservice.com/moving-costs/) page covers the remainder of what moves the number.

Tell us both addresses, the floor at either end, and the hour your building allows you to start. Call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215) or [send us the details](https://agmovingservice.com/contact/#quote), and the drive arrives priced rather than guessed at on the day.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is double drive time in California?

Double drive time is the way an hourly California move counts the drive between your old address and your new one: twice, inside the hourly total. Loading and unloading count once each. It works on minutes rather than mileage, and nobody adds it as a separate fee at the end. California applies it to every hourly move, and it goes into the written estimate before move day.

### Does double drive time double my moving bill?

No. Only the driving slice counts twice, and on most local moves the drive is small next to the loading, the carrying and the unloading. A 20-minute drive becomes 40 minutes on the clock. The hours you spend on staircases, hallways and furniture are unaffected by the rule entirely.

### Does double drive time apply to a short move across town?

Yes. There is no minimum distance, so a hop of a few blocks has its drive counted twice exactly like a cross-county run. On a short move that is a handful of minutes, which is why the loading and the carrying matter far more to your total than the route does.

### Am I paying for the truck to drive from the mover's yard to my house?

Ask before you book. Have any mover you are comparing say out loud what the clock covers and where the counting starts, and get that answer on the written estimate rather than at the tailgate. It is a cheap question to ask and an expensive one to skip.

### How do I find out how much drive time will be on my bill?

Look the route up yourself. Put both addresses into a maps application, set the departure time to the weekday and hour your move actually starts, take the slower end of the range it offers, and double it. That figure is roughly what the drive contributes to the hourly clock. Or send us both addresses and it comes back inside a written estimate that caps the bill.
