# Your First Apartment Checklist, in the Order Things Actually Happen

Most of a first apartment checklist is not yours to schedule. The building picks the move-in window, the utilities pick their own start dates, and the leasing office decides what time you get keys. Sort the list by those dates instead of by category. It gets shorter, and the order stops being a guess. Here is how a first move runs in Los Angeles and Orange County, week by week.

## At a glance

- The building owns the longest lead times on the list. Ask about its move-in window before you book anything else.
- Buy cartons, a marker, painter's tape and a box cutter. Packing tape is included with a quoted move. We bring the wrap, blankets, door shields, floor runners and loaner wardrobe boxes.
- Date every utility for the day before your keys, not the morning of the move.
- Measure the sofa, the narrowest turn and the elevator opening while the old place is still full.
- An empty apartment has no bulbs, no shower curtain and no tools in it. Pack a first-night bag that assumes that.
- Photograph every room before the furniture arrives. Ten minutes there settles a deposit argument a year later.

## Four weeks out: the building sets every other date

The building sets the dates the rest of your move has to fit around, so call the leasing office before you book a crew or a truck. Ask three questions and write the answers down.

- Which hours furniture is allowed through the doors, and whether weekends count.
- Whether the elevator or the loading door has to be reserved, and how far ahead.
- What the building wants from a moving company in writing, and which email it goes to.

Buildings set move-in hours in the house rules rather than in the lease, and weekday-only windows are common. Guessing that one wrong is expensive, because rebooking a crew, a truck and an elevator together is harder than booking them was.

Most managers also want proof of insurance from your mover before the freight elevator opens. We handle that paperwork with your management office, along with the elevator window. Give us the manager's email when you ask for a price and it stops being your errand. Our [apartment moving](https://agmovingservice.com/services/apartment-moving/) page covers the building side.

Book the crew as soon as you have the window. Standard bookings reschedule free, so booking early costs nothing if the office later moves your handoff. Call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215) and describe the building.

## Three weeks out: buy the boxes, not the wrap

Buy cartons, a marker, painter's tape and a box cutter. That is close to the entire list, because the protective materials arrive on the truck. Unlimited wrap and tape, thick moving blankets, door shields, floor runners, ramps, straps, speed-pack boxes and up to 8 loaner wardrobe boxes come with a quoted move at no extra cost. Buying them twice is the standard first-move mistake.

**A loaner wardrobe box** is a tall carton with a hanging rail across the top. Your closet rail transfers into it, the clothes travel on their hangers, and the box leaves with the crew at the end of the day.

Plan on 15 to 25 cartons for a studio and 25 to 40 for a one-bedroom, then adjust for books and kitchen equipment. Stick to two or three sizes, since cartons that share a footprint stack on a dolly and oddments do not. [Uline's box list](https://www.uline.com/BL_414/Packing-Storage-Boxes) publishes the standard dimensions.

Packing a first apartment is a smaller job than it feels. Three evenings and one Saturday covers most of it, if the closet and the kitchen each get a session. If the week disappears, [packing services](https://agmovingservice.com/services/packing-services/) puts a crew on it the day before the move.

## Two weeks out: utilities, the mail and the address list

Utilities want a start date the day before your keys, not the morning of the move. An apartment with no power on move-in afternoon is a dark hallway and a crew working slower than you are paying for. Open the accounts as soon as your lease dates are fixed.

- Gas. [SoCalGas](https://www.socalgas.com/services) asks for a Social Security number to verify your identity, and it needs a meter already installed at the address.
- Power in Edison territory. Southern California Edison lets you [pick a start date](https://www.sce.com/customer-service-center/help-center/stop-start-move-service/faq/request-specific-date-to-start-stop-service) in advance through its move center.
- Power and water inside the city of Los Angeles. LADWP covers both on one account. Outside the city limits, water is usually a separate agency and a separate phone call.

Mail forwarding is a bridge rather than a fix. File it with [USPS](https://www.usps.com/manage/forward.htm) about two weeks ahead. Then treat each forwarded envelope as a to-do item: it names somebody who still has your old address. Your bank, your employer, your insurer and the DMV need telling directly, and the DMV sets its own deadline. [USAGov lists who to notify](https://www.usa.gov/change-address), so work down that list in your first week.

## The last week: keys, measurements and the curb

Keys are the fixed point the last week turns on, so confirm the exact handoff time by email and confirm it again the day before. **A key handoff** is the appointment where the leasing office puts keys in your hand, and it is the one date on this list that can move without warning. Offices often close early on Fridays, and plenty stay shut on Sundays. If yours slips, move the crew rather than trying to move faster.

For example, say the office hands you keys at 3pm and the building's move-in window closes at 5pm. That is not a moving afternoon. It is a two-hour slot that ends whether or not the truck is empty, and the fix is an earlier handoff.

Measure while the old place is still full. A sofa that will not turn a stairwell corner is a five-minute discovery with a tape measure. At 9am on move day it is not solvable at all. Take four numbers: the sofa's diagonal, the narrowest turn on the route, the elevator opening, and the apartment door.

Then look at the curb. A 24-ft truck needs clear space and a walkable route to the door. Some cities require a permit for a moving truck and some require nothing at all. Anaheim, for one, will hold a length of curb through a [parking variance](https://www.anaheim.net/DocumentCenter/View/262), and its form asks for at least five business days. Call your city's parking desk, or send us the address and we will check it.

## Move-in day, in the order it runs

Move-in day runs in a fixed order, and photographs come before furniture. Walk the unit with your phone before anything crosses the threshold. Ten minutes while the rooms are bare, and it cannot be done once a sofa is standing in one.

1. **Photograph the empty unit.** Every room, the appliances, the floors, the window tracks and any mark already on a wall.
2. **Protection goes down.** Door shields and floor runners, laid by the crew before the first item moves.
3. **Big furniture first.** Beds, sofas and tables, while the route is clear and nobody is stepping over cartons.
4. **Boxes next.** Stacked in the rooms written on their sides, not piled by the front door.
5. **Build the bed before anyone is tired.** It is the one piece of assembly that has to be finished tonight.

Keep the box cutter out of the boxes. For instance, one common way to end a move day is a sealed carton of bulbs, a sealed carton of tools, and the only blade sealed inside a third.

**A first-night bag** is the one bag you pack last and open first. Bedding, a towel, a charger, medication, toilet paper, hand soap, a shower curtain, and a lamp with a working bulb. A first apartment supplies none of it, and ceiling fixtures with no bulbs in them are a standard surprise.

## Where a first apartment gets hard in Los Angeles and Orange County

First apartments get hard in two ways here, and the building stock decides which one you get. The first kind is the walk-up, where there is no elevator and every carton travels a stairwell on somebody's shoulder. Those run through [Long Beach](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/long-beach/), Pasadena, Glendale and central [Los Angeles](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/los-angeles/): tight landings, no loading door, and street parking gone by 8am. Stairs cost hours, which is why the estimate asks about them before move day rather than after.

Managed complexes are the other kind, common in [Irvine](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/irvine/), Anaheim, Santa Ana, Torrance and Downey. Those usually have a loading zone, a gate code and a freight elevator, which all help. They also have an office that closes before your move does, and paperwork it wants in advance. The four-week phone call matters more there than the stairs do.

## Your first apartment checklist as five dates

The whole first apartment checklist fits on five lines, because every item on it belongs to somebody else's calendar.

- Four weeks out: the building's window, the elevator, the insurance paperwork, the crew.
- Three weeks out: cartons and a marker, then pack the rooms you use least.
- Two weeks out: utilities dated the day before your keys, and mail forwarding filed.
- The last week: confirm the handoff, measure the furniture, sort the curb, pack the bag.
- Move day: photographs, protection, furniture, boxes, bed.

A first move goes wrong when a task carrying somebody else's deadline gets treated like a task carrying yours.

Tell us the building's window, the floor, the elevator and the parking, and we will price the day around them. A [local move](https://agmovingservice.com/services/local-moving/) is quoted before the day, with the crew sized to your apartment, and the written estimate caps your bill. There is no deposit on standard bookings; same-day and last-minute bookings may require a deposit, confirmed with your quote. [What a move costs](https://agmovingservice.com/moving-costs/) explains the rest.

Call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215) or [send us the details](https://agmovingservice.com/contact/#quote), seven days a week, 8am to 8pm. ## Frequently asked questions

### What do I need to do before moving into my first apartment?

Call the leasing office about four weeks out, because the building owns the longest lead times on the whole list. Ask which hours furniture is allowed through the doors, whether the elevator has to be reserved, and what the building wants from your moving company in writing. Book the crew once you have those answers. Everything after that is utilities, mail and shopping, and none of it depends on anybody else's calendar.

### How many boxes do I need for a first apartment?

Plan on 15 to 25 cartons for a studio and 25 to 40 for a one-bedroom, then adjust upward for books and kitchen equipment. Two or three sizes are plenty. You do not need to buy wrap, tape or blankets, because those ride on the truck with a quoted move.

### How much does it cost to move into a first apartment in Los Angeles?

A local move with AG Moving&Storage is quoted before the day: you tell us the apartment, the stairs and the parking, and we put a free written estimate together. That written figure caps your bill. What moves the number on a first apartment is access rather than volume: stairs, elevator waits and how far the truck parks from the door.

### Do I need renters insurance for a first apartment?

Most leases require it, and the leasing office checks the effective date rather than the purchase date. Buy the policy before the key handoff, not after. Ask the office what coverage limits it wants to see, because that number comes from the building rather than from you.

### What should I buy before move-in day?

Light bulbs, a shower curtain and rings, toilet paper, hand soap, trash bags, a lamp and a basic screwdriver set. An empty apartment supplies none of it, and the fixtures often have no bulbs in them. Add a box cutter and keep it in your pocket rather than inside a sealed carton.
