# The Hidden Costs of Moving: The Bills That Never Come From the Mover

The hidden costs of moving are rarely a line on the mover's invoice. They are the technician who unhooks the gas dryer, the county drop-off run with the paint and the propane, and the two days you spend away from work. Our written estimate caps what we charge you, so this page is about everything sitting outside it. It is for somebody in Los Angeles or Orange County holding a quote and wondering what else the month costs. The moving costs page covers our half of the arithmetic. For a figure that already accounts for the awkward parts, call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215).

## At a glance

- A gas appliance needs a qualified professional at both addresses, and that appointment belongs on the calendar before the moving date does.
- The truck cannot carry propane, gasoline, paint, aerosols, pool chemicals or ammunition, so the garage pile needs a trip of its own in your own car.
- Anything screwed into a wall comes down before the crew arrives, and drywall anchors do not survive being pulled out of the plaster.
- Wrap, tape, blankets, floor runners, door shields and up to eight loaner wardrobe boxes ride on the truck already, so buying them is money spent twice.
- The building, rather than the mover, sets the move-in window and any deposit attached to it.
- Overlapping rent, utility connection charges and your own time away from work are usually the largest numbers on this page.

## What the hidden costs of moving actually are

The hidden costs of moving fall into three piles, and not one of them is a secret fee. **A hidden cost** is any money or time your move takes that never appears on the mover's estimate: somebody else's invoice, your own hours, or something already on the truck.

Our own side stops moving once you approve it, because the written estimate works as a cap. That is why we ask about stairs, storage stops and appliances while we quote. Nobody caps the other three weeks for you, so work through the list below about two weeks out. Every item on it has a phone number or an address attached.

## The appliances nobody can unhook on move morning

Appliances are the first of these costs most households meet, because our crew is not the one that unhooks them. We move appliances; we do not disconnect or reconnect them. That work belongs to a technician or a plumber, on the day before rather than the morning itself.

Gas is the part with no shortcut in it. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's [alert on flexible gas connectors](https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/gas.pdf) says a connector should be replaced whenever the appliance is moved from its location. Only a qualified professional should inspect one or change it. The same alert warns against shifting the appliance yourself to take a look, because older uncoated brass connectors can fail from that movement alone.

**Transit bolts** are the metal rods that lock a front-load washer's drum in place for transport, and most front-loaders are shipped with a set. Find yours during move week rather than on the day. They are often taped to the back panel, the manual names the part number, and the manufacturer sells replacements when they have gone missing. Drain the hoses into a bucket the night before, since a washer holds water long after its final cycle.

A refrigerator wants a full day of warning. Empty it, defrost it, dry the inside, shut off and drain the ice maker line, then prop the door open overnight. Check the manual for what it asks after transport, since many want the unit standing upright for a few hours before it goes back on power.

**A service call** is the minimum an appliance technician or a plumber bills for showing up, whether the visit runs 10 minutes or an hour. Budget two of them for a gas dryer: one to disconnect, one to install at the new address. Book both early, because Saturday appointments go first.

## What the truck will not carry, and where it goes instead

The truck will not carry hazardous materials, and that is one rule with no exceptions worth asking about. Gasoline, propane and butane cylinders, paint, thinner, aerosols, pool chemicals, lighter fluid, flares, fireworks, ammunition and car batteries all stay behind. Open liquids, perishable food and some plants ride better in your own car.

The category is broader than most people picture. The EPA counts leftover products [such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries and pesticides](https://www.epa.gov/hw/household-hazardous-waste-hhw) as household hazardous waste, which is most of a garage shelf. The trash can is not the way out either. [CalRecycle](https://calrecycle.ca.gov/homehazwaste/info/) is blunt: disposing of hazardous waste in the garbage, down storm drains or onto the ground is illegal, because it can harm health and cause fires.

Both counties take it free of charge, and both cap a single trip at 15 gallons or 125 pounds. Orange County runs [four collection centers](https://oclandfills.com/hhw), in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine and San Juan Capistrano, open Tuesday through Saturday and closed in rainy weather. [Los Angeles County](https://cleanla.lacounty.gov/hhw/collection-centers/) mixes permanent centers with free drive-through events, most of them on a Saturday. Its advice for the drive is worth copying: keep products in their original containers, do not mix them, and carry the boxes in the trunk.

Timing is the part people get wrong. For example, if your move is a Saturday in [Long Beach](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/long-beach/), the run has to happen the weekend before. Most of that pile hides under the kitchen sink, and [packing a kitchen](https://agmovingservice.com/blog/how-to-pack-a-kitchen/) works through the rest of the cupboard.

## The walls, and the hardware nobody buys until move morning

Walls cost more than people expect, in small and irritating amounts. Anything screwed into a wall or a ceiling comes off before the crew arrives: the television mount, the floating shelf, the curtain rods, the mirror above the dresser. Furniture is a different matter, and taking it apart and rebuilding it at the other end is our work rather than yours.

Buy the replacement hardware while you have the screwdriver in your hand. A drywall anchor does not survive being pulled back out of the wall, and reusing one is how a shelf ends up on the floor at the new address. A single trip covers the anchors, a few screws, a tube of filler and a small pot of touch-up paint for the holes you are leaving behind.

## What your building charges, and what it does not

Your building's costs arrive before ours do, and the management sets them rather than the mover. The certificate of insurance comes from us at no charge, and we coordinate the elevator reservation at the same time. The move-in window, the booking form and any refundable deposit belong to the building alone.

Ask the manager this week what they need from the mover, what they charge you for the move-in, and how much notice they want. High-rise buildings around [Los Angeles](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/los-angeles/) tend to want the paperwork several days ahead, then hand out a fixed elevator window. Gated communities in [Irvine](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/irvine/) want a gate code and a name list at the kiosk. Older walk-ups in Long Beach have no elevator to reserve at all, which turns the question into stairs and hours instead.

## Parking, in one phone call

Parking is a five-minute phone call that becomes expensive when nobody makes it. Some cities want a permit for a moving truck and some do not, and the cities that do usually want several business days of notice. Call your city's parking desk, or send us the address and we will check it while we quote.

Read the street sweeping sign on your own block while you are out there, because a swept side is a blocked side for a couple of hours. [Parking a moving truck across LA and Orange County](https://agmovingservice.com/blog/moving-truck-parking-los-angeles-orange-county/) goes through the region city by city.

## The money people spend twice

Spending twice is the easiest cost on this page to avoid, and it comes from not knowing what arrives on the truck. Door shields, floor runners, ramps and straps, thick blankets, unlimited wrap and tape, speed-pack boxes and up to eight loaner wardrobe boxes come with the crew and cost nothing extra.

Your own shopping list is short. Cartons in two or three sizes, packing paper, tape, a marker, and a mattress bag if the mattress is newer than the sofa. Buy 10 more cartons than you think you need, then ask the store whether it takes the unused ones back, because plenty of them will.

If the packing is the part you dread, [packing services](https://agmovingservice.com/services/packing-services/) run on the same hourly clock as the move and sit inside the same written figure.

## The costs that are made of time

Time is the cost most people leave out of the budget, and it is usually the largest number here. Four items sit in this pile, and each one has an answer you can go and get this week instead of guessing at it.

1. **Overlapping housing.** Count the days when rent or a mortgage runs at both addresses. That figure is knowable today, and it often decides the moving date on its own.
2. **Utility setup.** Call each provider and ask what a connection or a transfer costs, and how many days it takes. Charges and lead times vary by provider and by address, so ask rather than assume.
3. **The old place, cleaned.** Consider which you would rather spend: a Saturday of your own, or a cleaner's invoice. Decide before the week fills up around you.
4. **Your own hours.** The last carload, the walk-through, the key handover, the wait for an internet appointment. Plan on more than one day away from work, because one is optimistic.

## Put it in the quote instead of on the bill

Put these in the quote and none of them arrives as a surprise. Everything on this page is predictable, which means it can be priced rather than survived. Tell us about the gas dryer, the storage stop, the walk-up and the garage, and the figure comes back in writing with a cap on it.

List every address the move touches as well: a storage unit, a parent's garage, a locker at work. If the keys and the lease do not meet, say so early, because we collect, store and redeliver on the same written estimate.

Our baseline is two movers and a 24-ft truck, and the crew your home needs is priced into the free written estimate. There is no deposit on standard bookings; same-day and last-minute bookings may require one, confirmed with your quote.

Call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215), seven days a week, or [send us the details](https://agmovingservice.com/contact/#quote) and we will price the awkward parts along with the rest.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are the hidden costs of moving?

They are mostly other people's charges rather than the mover's. An appliance technician to unhook a gas dryer and install it again, a trip to a county drop-off with the paint and the propane, a pack of drywall anchors, whatever your building charges for a move-in, and the days you take off work. Our written estimate caps what we charge, so the surprises live outside it, and every one of them can be found and priced about two weeks ahead.

### Do movers disconnect a gas dryer or a washing machine?

No. We move appliances; we do not disconnect or reconnect them. Have the gas, water and power lines unhooked before the crew arrives, and let your own installer handle the far end. A gas line needs a qualified professional either way, so book that visit for the day before the move rather than the morning of it.

### What will movers not take on moving day?

Hazardous materials, and no licensed mover makes an exception. That covers gasoline, propane and butane cylinders, paint, solvents, aerosols, pool chemicals, lighter fluid, flares, fireworks, ammunition and car batteries. Open liquids, perishable food and some plants also travel better in your own car than in a loaded truck, so keep a cooler and a footwell free.

### Who pays for the certificate of insurance and the elevator reservation?

The certificate of insurance comes from us at no charge, and we coordinate the elevator reservation at the same time. What the building charges is a separate question, and only the building can answer it. Ask your manager three things: what they need from the mover, what they charge you, and how many days ahead they want the paperwork.

### Does a stop at a storage unit cost extra on moving day?

It costs hours, which is why it belongs in the quote rather than in the day. A second address means loading in two places and driving between them, and California Double Drive Time counts that driving twice. Named in advance, the stop sits inside the written figure that caps your bill.
