# Long Beach Street Sweeping and Move Day: Holding the Curb

Street sweeping in Long Beach operates weekly, and most residential blocks carry two posted days rather than a single one. Those two days, together with the hour window printed alongside them, determine where a moving truck can legally stand on your move morning. This page is for anybody organizing a Long Beach move who would rather settle the curb a week beforehand.

## At a glance

- Look up both addresses on the city's interactive sweeping map before you commit to a date, because most Long Beach blocks return two separate days.
- The hour window matters more than the days themselves. A 5am restriction and a 10am restriction produce completely different move mornings.
- A 24-foot truck with the ramp lowered wants approximately 35 feet of clear curb: the vehicle, the ramp, and enough room to walk behind it.
- Sweeping enforcement pauses on eleven posted holidays, although red, white and blue curbs remain enforced on every one of them.
- Long Beach issues several residential parking permits and none is a mover's permit. Street Operations is the department that designates space for a van.
- Alleys are the shorter carry across a good deal of this city, and they are also where one dumpster ruins an entire morning.

## Find your Long Beach street sweeping days first

Long Beach publishes the schedule through an [interactive map](https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/846a17aadb6e40d79f4da0470d106bcf) that Public Works links from its [street sweeping page](https://www.longbeach.gov/pw/services/street-sweeping/). Enter the address and it returns whatever the city holds for that area, which is normally a pair of days and one time window. Thursday and Friday from 10am to 12pm is a typical answer, and so is Monday and Tuesday from 5am to 8am.

Read the hour before you agree a start time with anybody, because an early restriction can be finished before the crew even arrives. A late one lands squarely in the middle of loading. By that point the truck is the heaviest thing on the block to reposition.

Then go outside and look at the sign. Public Works puts the instruction plainly: always move your vehicle in accordance with the posted street sweeping signs. The map belongs at your kitchen table during planning, while the sign is the version enforcement actually reads.

Rain does not settle the question either. Sweeping may or may not happen on a wet day, and Public Works confirms a cancellation through its [street sweeping page](https://www.longbeach.gov/pw/services/street-sweeping/). Assume the restriction still applies until you have heard otherwise.

Holidays are the one clean exemption, and they cover considerably less than people hope. The city suspends sweeping enforcement on [eleven posted holidays](https://www.longbeach.gov/parking/holidays/), Juneteenth and the day after Thanksgiving among them. It is equally clear that red, white and blue curbs remain enforced on all eleven, so a holiday buys you the sweeping window and nothing beyond it.

## The permit question, and who to call about it

Some cities require a permit for a moving truck and others require nothing whatsoever. The answer that counts is the one your city's [parking desk](https://www.longbeach.gov/parking/) gives about your particular address, and a telephone call settles it in about a minute. Long Beach issues several residential parking permits, and none of them is written for a moving company.

One line on the city's [oversized vehicle permit page](https://www.longbeach.gov/parking/oversized-permit/) is the line genuinely worth having. For a designated no-parking area for a moving van, it directs you to contact Street Operations. That request is yours to make, and it belongs two or three weeks ahead rather than during move week.

Where nothing gets designated, the curb becomes a neighbor question instead of a municipal one. Leave your own car in the space overnight and pull it out when the truck arrives. Tell the households on either side which morning it is, a few days beforehand, because most people will shift a vehicle when somebody asks them early enough.

Or skip the errand entirely. Send us the address and we check the sweeping day and the parking situation while your quote is prepared. Call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215) or [send us the details](https://agmovingservice.com/contact/#quote).

## What a 24-foot truck needs at the curb

A 24-foot truck needs roughly 35 feet of clear curb once the ramp is lowered. That covers the vehicle, the ramp behind it, and enough room to walk around the back. Measure the gap rather than judging it from a second-floor window. Older Long Beach blocks with a driveway cut between every pair of houses rarely hand you that space without a neighbor's cooperation.

Then look upward. **Overhead clearance** is the lowest obstruction over the truck's path, and it defeats a box truck considerably more often than parked cars do. Carport beams, low branches and the height bar at a subterranean garage entrance all qualify. Read the number posted at the ramp and tell us what it says, because a loaded truck stands well above most of them.

Alleys deserve their own walk. **An alley-loaded block** is one where the garages, gates and refuse bins face a rear alley instead of the street. A good deal of older Long Beach is laid out exactly that way. The alley is usually the shorter carry to a back door, and it is also narrow enough that a truck departs the way it entered. One dumpster halfway down converts a short approach into a rethink.

## The two weeks before move day

Two weeks is comfortable lead time for all of this, and none of the five steps below takes longer than a telephone call.

1. Look up both addresses on the sweeping map, then write down the two days and the window for each. The place you are moving into has its own separate schedule.
2. Contact Street Operations through the city's [oversized vehicle permit page](https://www.longbeach.gov/parking/oversized-permit/) if the block is genuinely tight and you want space designated for the van.
3. Measure the curb, then photograph the block, the approach and the front door. Two pictures tell us considerably more than a paragraph of description.
4. Confirm your refuse collection day at both addresses. Four bins parked at the curb swallow most of a truck length, and nobody reclaims that frontage at 8am.
5. Ask the neighbors on either side to leave the space clear that morning, and put your own car into it the previous evening.

For example, say the map returns Thursday and Friday at the address you are leaving. At the address you are moving into it returns Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday is then the only weekday with no sweeping window at either end, which is worth establishing before you choose the date.

## What goes wrong on a Long Beach block

The sweeper arriving mid-load is what goes wrong most often, and it is entirely avoidable. Repositioning a half-loaded truck takes a quarter of an hour at absolute best, and the space you return to is seldom the space you surrendered. On an hourly move, that interruption is money.

Consider a walk-up apartment near Retro Row with a 10am to 12pm restriction and a crew booked for 9am. The first load comes out, the second is halfway down the stairs, and at ten to ten everything stops so somebody can shift the truck. An 8am start would have cleared the window before it opened.

A gate code that only one person knows produces the same result, because the crew waits at the driveway with the clock running. If a citation lands on you anyway, the city operates a [contest citation](https://www.longbeach.gov/parking/citations/) process, and a street sweeping citation is contested through the same channel.

## Where the curb lands on your bill

Curb access reaches a Long Beach bill through the clock, never as a separate line item. [Local moving](https://agmovingservice.com/services/local-moving/) is quoted before the day, with the crew sized to your street and the figure built into the written estimate. A truck at the door and a truck 200 feet along the street cost the same per hour and accomplish very different amounts inside it.

**A long carry** is the distance between the truck's tailgate and your door, and on an hourly move it is paid for in minutes. A long walk we know about in advance becomes a staffing decision, usually a third mover so the carrying gets divided. The identical walk discovered on the morning is an hour nobody scheduled.

So describe the block, the building and the sign when you ask for a figure. Your written estimate caps the bill, which means the price gets built on the version of the street we hear at quote time. [Apartment moving](https://agmovingservice.com/services/apartment-moving/) covers elevators and building move-in windows, [moving costs](https://agmovingservice.com/moving-costs/) sets out what else shifts the number, and our [Long Beach service area](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/long-beach/) page covers what we run here.

Moves out of the city need both calendars checked rather than one. [Downey](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/downey/), [Bellflower](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/bellflower/) and [Norwalk](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/norwalk/) each run their own sweeping calendar, so check the new address exactly the way you checked the old one.

## Book it with the curb already sorted

Book the move with the curb settled and the morning starts on time, which is most of what a straightforward move day amounts to. Give us the block and we price the job you are actually having, rather than a tidier version of it. A written figure that already allows for a difficult curb beats a cheap hourly rate that quietly assumes an empty one.

Call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215) or [send us the details of your move](https://agmovingservice.com/contact/#quote), and tell us what the sign on your own block says. AG Moving&Storage is family-owned and works across Los Angeles and Orange County, with crews running into Long Beach from Norwalk seven days a week. There is more about us on the site if you want to read it before booking anything, and our license numbers are USDOT 3610341, CAL-T192465, CA 602741 and MC 1525501.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I find my street sweeping day in Long Beach?

Enter your address on the interactive map that Public Works links from its street sweeping page. Most Long Beach addresses come back with two days and a single time window, such as Thursday and Friday from 10am to 12pm. Then walk outside and read the sign at your own curb, because the posted sign is what a parking officer enforces.

### Does street sweeping stop on holidays in Long Beach?

Yes, on eleven holidays the city posts, including New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day afterward. Red, white and blue curbs remain enforced on all eleven. A holiday clears the sweeping window and nothing else, so it will not rescue a genuinely difficult block on its own.

### Do movers need a parking permit in Long Beach?

Usually not, and the dependable answer belongs to your particular address rather than your city. Long Beach issues several residential parking permits, and none of them is written for a moving company. If you want a no-parking area marked out for a moving van, the city's own \[oversized vehicle permit page\](https://www.longbeach.gov/parking/oversized-permit/) directs you to contact Street Operations. Send us the address instead and we will check it while we prepare your quote.

### Can a moving truck use the alley behind my Long Beach house?

Often yes, because the alley is usually the shorter carry, but walk the length of it first. Alleys here are narrow enough that a 24-foot truck leaves the way it entered, in reverse. Look for a dumpster, a parked car, a low wire and your neighbors' bins before you arrange the morning around the back gate.

### Is street sweeping cancelled when it rains in Long Beach?

Sometimes. Public Works says sweeping may or may not happen on a rainy day, and its \[street sweeping page\](https://www.longbeach.gov/pw/services/street-sweeping/) is where a cancellation is confirmed. Move the vehicle anyway unless you have that confirmation, because the posted restriction is the thing enforcement acts on.
