# Oversized Vehicle Parking Permit: Who Can Apply, and When You Need One

An oversized vehicle parking permit goes to the person who lives at the address, for a vehicle that belongs to them. That one fact answers most of what people ask about it, including the awkward part. This is generally not the permit that puts a moving truck at your curb. Below is who can apply, when a household move genuinely needs one, and what to do with the motorhome in your driveway on the morning.

## At a glance

- The applicant is almost always the resident, and the permit covers their own vehicle in front of their own home.
- A moving truck usually parks under a city's loading and unloading allowance instead, which needs no application.
- Huntington Beach and Irvine are the local exceptions, because our 24-foot truck is longer than Huntington Beach's 22-foot line and wider than Irvine's 84-inch one.
- Most permits run 24 to 72 hours, and cities limit how many you can hold, over a counting window each one sets for itself.
- A permit lifts a restriction. It never empties a parking space, and in most cities it will not save you from street sweeping.
- One call to your city's parking desk settles all of this. Send us the address instead and we check it while we price the job.

## Who can apply for an oversized vehicle parking permit

Residency is what qualifies you to apply for an oversized vehicle parking permit in the cities around us. The counter wants a person tied to the address, a vehicle tied to that person, and a stretch of curb in front of that same home. Some cities extend it to a houseguest's motorhome. None of them hands one to whoever asks.

**An oversized vehicle** is one a city treats as too long, too wide or too tall for ordinary street parking, and every city sets its own line. Twenty-two feet, 25 feet, 84 inches wide: the threshold that matters is the one in your city, not the one in the next.

**An oversized vehicle parking permit** is written permission for one named vehicle to stand where that size rule would otherwise keep it off the street.

So a mover cannot normally pull one for its truck, and a mover who says otherwise deserves a follow-up question about which city and which permit. Several cities exclude commercial vehicles from theirs in plain words. We will not tell you we can obtain one in Garden Grove or Ontario, because we cannot.

What a truck at your door actually relies on is the loading and unloading allowance most cities keep for a vehicle working an adjacent property. Whether that covers your particular block is a question for your city's parking desk. Call them, or send the address to us and we will check it while we build your [local moving](https://agmovingservice.com/services/local-moving/) quote. The number here is [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215).

## When a household move actually needs one

A household move needs this permit when something oversized of yours has to sit on the public street. That is narrower than it sounds, and it catches three situations.

- Your motorhome, camper or boat trailer has to leave the driveway so the crew can use that space. Nothing else on the property will hold it.
- You are moving yourself with a rented trailer or a portable container, and the box stays at the curb overnight.
- You have moved within the city limits in the last 90 days and the large vehicle has no permanent home yet. Several cities run a short permit for that exact gap, and [Corona](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/corona/) is one of them. Its [public parking page](https://www.coronaca.gov/departments/public-works/traffic-engineering/public-parking) sends you to the police department.

For example, a 20-foot travel trailer parked at the curb across a whole weekend is the classic case for one of these permits. Four hours of loading a moving truck on a Saturday morning is not.

Clear the driveway either way. It is the single most useful thing you can do for the crew, and it is free. A carry that starts at a driveway rather than three houses down is the difference between a tidy job and a long one.

## The call that settles it, and what to bring

The call takes about ten minutes, and four questions cover everything you need from it.

- What counts as oversized at this address, measured in length, width and height.
- Who may apply, and whether the vehicle has to be registered to me.
- How many days of notice the department wants, and whether I can file online.
- How long one permit lasts, how many I may hold, and over what period those are counted.

For instance, our 24-foot truck sits over the threshold in one city and comfortably underneath it in the next, so the length question belongs in that conversation early.

Have the details in front of you before you dial: the address, the plate, the vehicle's length and width and height, and the dates you want. Expect to prove you live there, too. Huntington Beach asks for photo identification, the vehicle registration and a current utility bill on its [oversized vehicle parking permits page](https://www.huntingtonbeachca.gov/departments/transportation/parking/oversized_vehicle_parking_permits.php). Other counters ask for something close to that list.

Do it early. These applications are measured in business days rather than hours, so treat three weeks out as the comfortable window and stop thinking about it after that.

## Where this comes up around Los Angeles and Orange County

Around Los Angeles and Orange County, four cities turn this from paperwork into a genuine planning constraint. Each one differs.

[Huntington Beach](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/huntington-beach/) draws its line at 22 feet, and our standard truck measures 24. That makes the permit an advance errand rather than a move-morning surprise. It is one of the first things we raise when a Huntington Beach address arrives for a quote.

[Irvine](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/irvine/) is the strictest of the four, and it is a truck rule before it is a trailer rule. Irvine Police state that vehicles over 84 inches wide cannot park on a public roadway, and that detached trailers are not allowed on city streets at all; both sit on their page about [vehicles over 84 inches and detached trailers](https://irvinepd.gov/how-do-i/vehicles-over-84-and-detached-trailers/). Where the street cannot take the truck, the route is the city's Street Parking Variance, and Irvine PD asks for it a minimum of three to five business days ahead. Read that page whether you are hiring a mover or renting a trailer.

[Garden Grove](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/garden-grove/) publishes a whole [oversized vehicles page](https://ggcity.org/oversized-vehicles) and issues its permit to residents, for the frontage of their own address. The city also states that the permit buys no exemption from street sweeping, which is the kind of detail people usually discover from a citation on the windshield.

[Bellflower](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/bellflower/) is the unusual one, because it will permit an overnight moving trailer for a resident. The city's [parking permits page](https://bellflower.ca.gov/departments/public_safety/parking_permits_updated.php) is where that starts.

## What a permit will not do for you

A permit lifts a rule, and that is the whole of what it does. Four limits follow from that, and every one of them has ruined somebody's morning.

- It does not move the car already parked in your space, and nobody from the city arrives to do it either.
- It does not usually cover street sweeping. Check the posted day at both ends of the move before you pick a date.
- It does not cover the moving truck in most cities, however the vehicle is described on the form.
- It runs out. Caps on how many you can hold and 24- to 72-hour windows are normal, so a move that slides a week can outlast the permit you already used.

Hold the space the way it actually gets held, then. Park a household car in the gap and drive it out when the truck arrives, but check your city's overnight rule before you leave it there all night: Pasadena bans street parking citywide between 2:00 and 6:00 a.m., and Fullerton between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m., where a resident permit does not exempt you. Tell the neighbors either side which morning it is, about a week ahead, because most people will shift a car when somebody asks them in person. Then measure what is left rather than judging it from a window. A 24-foot truck with its ramp down wants 35 feet of clear curb, which is more room than two parked cars leave you.

## Send us the address before you book

Send us the address and we will tell you what your street means for the truck, before there is money on the table. Our crews start with two movers and a 24-foot truck as the baseline, and any additional mover is priced into the quote. Access goes into the written estimate, and that estimate caps your bill. The street we hear about at quote time is the street your price is built on.

Our [moving costs](https://agmovingservice.com/moving-costs/) page covers the rest of what moves the number, and the [service area pages](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/) carry the parking rules city by city.

Call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215) or [send us the details](https://agmovingservice.com/contact/#quote) and describe what the curb looks like. ## Frequently asked questions

### Who can apply for an oversized vehicle parking permit?

The person who lives at the address, in nearly every city that issues one. The permit is built around a resident and that resident's own vehicle, parked on the frontage of their own home, so the counter will want to see that you live there. A guest's motorhome is sometimes covered as well. Your city's parking desk will tell you in one short phone call which of those cases yours is.

### Can a moving company get a parking permit for its truck?

Usually not, and any mover who promises one should be asked which city and which permit. These permits are written for residents rather than for contractors, and several cities exclude a commercial vehicle from theirs outright. What a moving truck normally works under is the loading and unloading allowance, which is a different rule with no application attached. Huntington Beach and Irvine are the local addresses where paperwork really does have to be arranged ahead of the date: Huntington Beach issues an oversized vehicle permit, and Irvine asks for a Street Parking Variance three to five business days out.

### Does an oversized vehicle permit reserve the space in front of my house?

No. It lifts a size restriction for one named vehicle; it does not empty the curb or move anybody else's car. Nobody from the city comes out to clear the space either. Holding the gap is still your job, and a household car parked in it does that better than paperwork does. Check your city's overnight rule before you leave one there all night, though, because Pasadena and Fullerton both ban street parking citywide in the small hours.

### How long does an oversized vehicle parking permit last?

Most of them run somewhere between 24 and 72 hours, and cities cap how many you can hold. The numbers are set city by city, and so is the window they are counted over: Huntington Beach works in periods per calendar month, while Bellflower allows four moving-trailer permits per 24 months. Ask the parking desk about the cap in the same call, because that is the limit people trip over when a move slips a week.

### Where do I park my RV or boat trailer on moving day?

Off the street if you have anywhere at all to put it: a friend's driveway, a relative's, or a storage yard for the week. The driveway is the space the moving crew wants most, and a camper sitting in it turns a short carry into a long one. If the street is the only option, that is exactly when this permit becomes worth applying for, and it wants a few business days of notice.
