# Wardrobe Boxes for Moving: How Many, What Size, and Who Should Buy Them

Count wardrobe boxes for moving off a tape measure rather than off a bedroom count. A single carton swallows roughly two feet of compressed hanging rail, so a closet carrying six feet of garments needs three of them. This page is for the Los Angeles or Orange County household deciding this week whether to order any at all. It covers the dimensions, the loading sequence, the usual mistakes and the borrow-or-buy call.

## At a glance

- Measure every rail in feet with the garments compressed together. That measurement sets your carton count, and the number of bedrooms sets nothing.
- Suppliers manufacture to roughly two feet of rail per container. The listing for U-Haul's [Grand Wardrobe Box](https://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/Boxes/Clothing-Moving-Boxes/Grand-Wardrobe-Box/?id=6560) reads "Use 1 box for every 2 feet of hanging closet space".
- Height is the specification that catches people out. A 34-inch container suits shirts and jackets, while evening dresses, winter coats and dress uniforms require the 48-inch version.
- Our crews carry eight loaner wardrobe boxes as a ceiling on any quoted move, at no additional cost, and they depart with us at the end of the day.
- Loading one takes about two minutes. Bundle the hangers together, transfer the bundle in a single movement, then drop it over the bar.
- Cartons travel upright with nothing heavy stacked above them, and never lying flat across the back seat of a car.

## Measure the rail, not the bedrooms

The rail is the measurement your whole carton count comes from, so start there with a tape measure. Compress the garments together first, the way they will eventually sit inside a container, then measure the run they occupy and record it in feet. Do that for every closet in the house, including the coat closet by the door and the forgotten one in the garage.

**Rod length** is that recorded figure: the feet of rail your hanging garments genuinely fill once compressed, rather than the width of the closet housing them. Divide the total by two and the answer is your carton count.

For example, a one-bedroom apartment with a six-foot bedroom rail, a three-foot hall closet and two feet of coats reaches eleven feet, which becomes six cartons. Now consider a three-bedroom house with two walk-ins: two eight-foot rails, another six-foot rail and four feet of outerwear arrive at twenty-six feet, or thirteen cartons. The second household sits well beyond what any crew hands out free, and learning that during the estimate beats learning it at 8am on a Saturday.

How much rail eight loaners cover depends on their bar width, so measure your rails and bring the figure to the estimate rather than assuming eight is enough. Most two-bedroom homes finish under that ceiling. A double-hung walk-in passes it straight away, and so does anybody with a working collection of suits. Bring your rod measurements to the estimate and we will work out the overflow before you spend anything. Our [moving costs page](https://agmovingservice.com/moving-costs/) explains what else influences the final number.

## Three heights, and the one people get wrong

Height decides whether a container works at all, and three of them cover an ordinary closet. **A wardrobe box** is a tall corrugated carton with a metal bar across the top, so garments travel on the hangers already holding them rather than folded into a stack.

- **Tall.** U-Haul's Grand Wardrobe measures 24 by 21 by 48 inches, provides 14 cubic feet, arrives with a 24-inch bar and carries a 100-pound rating. Evening dresses, suits and full-length coats belong in this one.
- **Short.** The [Shorty Wardrobe](https://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/Boxes/Clothing-Moving-Boxes/Shorty-Wardrobe-Box/?id=3269) measures 24 by 20 by 34 inches for 9.4 cubic feet, and the listing puts it at shirts, blouses, sport coats and folded trousers. It stacks, which the tall container does not.
- **Narrow.** The [Space Saver](https://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/Boxes/Clothing-Moving-Boxes/Wardrobe-Box/?id=8698) runs 18 by 21 by 46 inches for 10 cubic feet, and because the width drops to 18 inches it takes a foot and a half of rail rather than two.
- **Flat.** **A laydown wardrobe** is a low horizontal container, published by U-Haul at 36-1/4 by 21 by 10-1/2 inches, designed to [slide underneath a bed](https://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/Boxes/Clothing-Moving-Boxes/Laydown-Wardrobe-Box/?id=8728). Treat it as a storage box rather than a moving one.

Measure your longest garment from the hanger hook to the hem before you order. A 48-inch carton gives slightly under four feet of usable drop once the bar and the closing flaps take their share. A floor-length gown inside a short container spends the whole day folded against the bottom. That crease is the one somebody irons out later.

Heavy knitwear is the exception to all of it. Chunky sweaters stretch permanently at the shoulder on a hanger, so they fold flat into an ordinary large carton instead. Our guide to packing clothes and shoes separates the fabrics that hang from the fabrics that do not.

## Loading one takes about two minutes

Two minutes a container is the realistic figure once the carton stands open, and the sequence below is what makes it that fast.

1. **Tape the bottom seam twice.** The bottom flaps carry the entire load, and a single strip of tape is exactly where a full carton gives way.
2. **Fit the bar before you load anything.** Doing it afterwards means lifting every garment twice.
3. **Bundle eight to ten hangers at the hooks.** A rubber band or a cable tie holds the group together, so nothing slips off on the way.
4. **Transfer the bundle in one movement.** Hook it straight over the bar without unhooking individual garments, which is the whole point of the box.
5. **Reserve the floor for light, soft belongings.** Footwear inside a bag, belts and handbags sit there comfortably; books and appliances do not.
6. **Write the closet name along the side, never the top.** Another carton will be sitting on the top, and you want the garments back in the right room.

A four-foot rail transfers in about five minutes. A whole bedroom closet, shelving included, becomes a fifteen-minute job instead of the evening that folding and refolding costs. Reverse the sequence at the destination: hang everything first, flatten the cartons afterwards, and your first night happens in a home with a working closet.

## Five ways a wardrobe box goes wrong

Wardrobe boxes fail in a small number of predictable ways, and every one of them is avoidable.

1. **The bottom accumulates books.** That Grand Wardrobe is rated to 100 pounds and your back is not. Consider a 48-inch carton loaded to sixty pounds, coming down the turn in the stairwell of an older Pasadena four-plex, carried by somebody who cannot see their own feet.
2. **A loaded carton travels lying down.** Garments slide into a heap at the low end and arrive worse than folded clothing. Keep it upright inside the truck, upright inside your car, and belted whenever it occupies a back seat.
3. **Something heavy gets stacked above.** Tall containers load last and ride against a wall of the truck. The short carton stacks safely, the tall one does not.
4. **Plastic film gets sealed in for months.** Dry-cleaner bags are acceptable for moving week and wrong for a season inside cardboard, because moisture is the mechanism behind the damage. The EPA states the position plainly in its [guide to mold and moisture](https://www.epa.gov/mold/brief-guide-mold-moisture-and-your-home): "The key to mold control is moisture control." Nothing damp goes into a sealed container at all.
5. **Nobody labels anything.** Six identical cartons arrive together, the guest room closet ends up in the primary bedroom, and sorting it out takes an hour.

One more thing is worth a phone call rather than a guess. Buildings set their own rules on move-in windows, elevator reservations and certificates of insurance. Ask your manager what applies, or send us the address and we will check it when we quote. A stack of 48-inch cartons moves slowly through a service elevator, so tell us about the building when we quote. The written estimate still caps what you pay.

## When buying your own is the right answer

Buying wins in four situations, and none of them is about price.

1. **You are packing weeks in advance.** Our materials arrive alongside the crew on the day. Containers you fill across three separate weekends have to stand in your hallway long before any truck exists, so those belong to you.
2. **The garments remain boxed at the destination.** A closet system that is not installed yet, or clothing heading into [storage between addresses](https://agmovingservice.com/services/storage/), needs a container that stays with the contents.
3. **Your rails measure beyond eight cartons.** Larger houses pass the ceiling, and overflow costs far less to plan than to solve on the driveway.
4. **You need a particular shape.** Full-length garments want the tall container, while clothing headed under a bed wants the flat one. Buying is how you choose.

## What we bring, and what to tell us

We bring the containers, the bars and everything that goes around them, included in a quoted move. Up to eight loaner wardrobe boxes travel with the crew alongside speed-pack cartons, unlimited wrap and tape, thick moving blankets, door shields and floor runners, all at no additional cost. Our [packing services](https://agmovingservice.com/services/packing-services/) page lists the complete kit, and the [packing pillar](https://agmovingservice.com/blog/what-it-takes-to-pack-a-socal-home/) carries the carton arithmetic for the rest of the house.

Three answers change what we load: your rod measurements in feet, whether anything reaches the floor, and whether garments are going into storage instead of a destination closet. Tell us all three when you call.

A [local move](https://agmovingservice.com/services/local-moving/) is quoted before the day, with two movers and a 24-ft truck as the baseline and any additional mover priced into the free written estimate. There is no deposit on standard bookings; same-day and last-minute bookings may require a deposit, confirmed with your quote. Your written estimate is the ceiling on what you finally pay.

Call [(818) 391-8215](tel:+18183918215) or [send us the details](https://agmovingservice.com/contact/#quote) for a written figure. Every dimension quoted above links to the supplier listing it came from, and the timings come from doing these closets every week. AG Moving&Storage is family-owned, based in Norwalk, working throughout [Los Angeles and Orange County](https://agmovingservice.com/service-areas/), and carrying USDOT 3610341 and CAL-T192465, plus CA 602741 and MC 1525501. ## Frequently asked questions

### How many wardrobe boxes do I need?

One carton for every two feet of hanging rail, measured with the garments compressed together. U-Haul manufactures to that same figure and publishes it on the listing: use 1 box for every 2 feet of hanging closet space, on a container fitted with a 24-inch bar. A six-foot reach-in closet therefore takes three cartons, and a walk-in with two eight-foot rails takes eight. Measure every rail in the property before ordering anything, because the bedroom count tells you nothing useful.

### Should I buy wardrobe boxes for a local move?

Usually not, because the crew already carries them. Up to eight loaner wardrobe boxes arrive with a quoted move at no extra cost, and they return to the truck once your garments are hanging in the destination closet. Buying makes sense in four situations: you are emptying closets weeks before any truck exists, the clothing remains boxed at the far end, your rails measure beyond eight cartons, or you need a height nobody hands you on the day.

### What size is a wardrobe box?

Three heights cover an ordinary closet, and suppliers publish the dimensions. U-Haul lists its Grand Wardrobe at 24 by 21 by 48 inches for 14 cubic feet, the Shorty at 24 by 20 by 34 inches for 9.4, and the narrower Space Saver at 18 by 21 by 46 inches for 10. Compare the height against your longest garment measured from the hanger hook to the hem, because that dimension decides whether a winter coat travels clear of the bottom of the container.

### Can I put shoes in the bottom of a wardrobe box?

Yes, and the space beneath the garments exists for exactly that. Keep it to light, soft things: footwear inside a bag, belts, handbags, folded knitwear. Corrugated board takes far more weight than people expect, since U-Haul rates its Grand Wardrobe to 100 pounds, but whoever carries a 48-inch carton down an outside stairwell is the real limit. Books, tools and kitchen appliances go in a small carton instead.

### Can clothes stay in wardrobe boxes in storage?

For a few weeks, comfortably. For months, remove the dry-cleaner film beforehand and never seal anything damp inside, because moisture is what starts the damage. A flat laydown wardrobe also earns its place over a longer period, since it slides under a bed instead of taking up floor space. Tell us at quote time if clothes are going into storage, because it changes which containers we bring.
