California Renters Rights and Moving Out: A Six-Week Plan

Give yourself six weeks. Moving out of a California rental is mostly scheduling: the notice goes in, a date gets booked, the rooms empty out, and the keys change hands. California renters rights sit on top of that timeline rather than replacing it, and only one of them actually depends on the day your truck arrives. The plan below suits a tenant in Los Angeles or Orange County who has an end date and no schedule yet. If you want the truck slotted into it properly, call (818) 391-8215 and describe both addresses.

At a glance

Six weeks out: send the notice, then book the truck

The notice goes first, because it fixes the date everything else hangs on. Read your own lease before you write anything. A fixed term usually ends on its own printed date, while a month-to-month tenancy in California normally needs written notice around 30 days ahead. Put it in writing either way, and keep proof of how it went out.

Book the crew as soon as that date is real. Month-end is the crush in this region, because most leases turn over on the first, so the last Friday and Saturday of every month disappear early. A Tuesday in the middle of the month is easier to staff, easier to park and considerably easier on your building.

Ask your building manager two questions on the same call. Does the elevator have to be reserved, and does the manager want a certificate of insurance from your mover? Both are ordinary requests, and both take days rather than minutes. You meet both requests more often in Long Beach and Glendale, where mid-rise rental buildings outnumber driveways.

Four weeks out: what to buy, and what our crews bring

Buy cartons, a marker and painter's tape, and skip almost everything else. Wrap, paper, tape, thick blankets, door shields and floor runners come with the move, along with up to 8 loaner wardrobe boxes, so paying for them twice is the common mistake.

Three carton sizes cover a household, and Uline lists the standard dimensions: 16 by 12 by 12 inches, 18 by 18 by 16, and 18 by 18 by 24. The rule that keeps a carton intact is weight rather than volume. Heavy things go in the smallest size and light things in the largest. For instance, books belong in the 16 by 12 by 12, filled level with the flaps, while pillows and lampshades can have the big one.

Two specialist cartons save more time on the day than they cost. Wardrobe boxes carry a hanging bar across the top, so a closet rail transfers straight across and the clothes travel on their hangers. A dish pack is a double-walled carton built for glass and china, and plates ride on edge inside it rather than lying flat.

Two jobs are worth doing yourself in the four weeks before a load, whoever packs the rest. Empty and defrost the freezer, and drain the fuel out of anything with a small engine. We can handle everything else as packing services if the weeks are disappearing faster than the boxes.

Two weeks out: why the truck should come before the walk-through

The truck should come first, and this is the one place where your moving date changes the outcome. A move-out walk-through is the inspection a California tenant can request near the end of a tenancy, so that anything chargeable ends up on a list while there is still time to fix it. Ask for it in writing when you send your notice.

Then get the rooms empty before it happens. A walk-through in a cleared apartment produces a specific list, and you still have days to work through it. Consider the same walk-through with the bed, the dresser and nine cartons still in position. Nobody examined the carpet under the bed or the wall behind the dresser, so neither surface is resolved and both can resurface after you hand back the keys. Our post on the pre-move-out inspection covers how the walk-through itself gets arranged.

Sometimes the dates simply refuse to split, because the new apartment is not ready and the old lease still has weeks to run. That gap is solvable rather than fatal: we collect the load, hold it in storage and redeliver on the date you set. The old unit empties on your schedule instead of the new landlord's.

California renters rights that matter on the way out

Three California renters rights shape the end of a tenancy. You can request the move-out walk-through described above, so anything chargeable reaches you as a list while you can still act on it. Your landlord owes you an itemized statement, with whatever is left of the deposit, within 21 days of you moving out, under Civil Code 1950.5. And California publishes a complaint route for when that statement never arrives. We move households for a living, so take those as the shape of the rules rather than the whole of them.

The state's own plain-language version beats any moving company's summary of it. Start with the California Courts guide to security deposits, and take a genuine dispute to a tenant service or an attorney rather than to a moving blog.

Move week: the curb, the elevator and what a crew cannot load

Move week is about access, and the curb decides most of it. Some cities need a permit for the truck and some do not. Call your city's parking desk, or send us the address and we check it when we quote. Pasadena is the one city in our service area publishing a moving-specific permit, and its own application exempts moving vehicles 25 feet and under. Our truck is 24 feet. Anaheim will reserve curb space with five business days of notice. Santa Ana publishes no route at all, so there the answer is planning rather than paperwork. The full picture across sixteen cities is a post of its own.

Walk your block the week before, whatever your city says. You are looking for the street sweeping day, roughly 35 feet of clear curb for a truck with its ramp down, and low branches over the approach. A walk-up is any building with no elevator, where every carton travels the stairs on somebody's shoulder. For example, a second-floor walk-up on a narrow Long Beach street with alley access behind it becomes a different job depending on which side the crew works from, and that is a five-minute question at quote time. Buildings with reserved elevators and insurance paperwork are ordinary work for us, and apartment moving explains how we handle them.

Some things never go on the truck at all, and discovering that at 8am costs you an hour. Propane, gasoline, paint, pool chemicals, aerosols and open liquids stay behind, and your county runs household hazardous waste drop-offs for exactly this problem. We also refuse some houseplants. Appliances travel with the rest, but we do not disconnect or reconnect them, so book a plumber or a gas fitter separately if the washer and the range are coming.

Key day: the last hour is the one that costs you

Key day ends with an hour of small tasks, and skipping that hour is what costs people money. A two-mover crew with a 24-foot truck typically clears a one-bedroom in three to six hours door to door, and stairs, a long carry or a shared elevator push that upward. Your written estimate settles the real figure for your two addresses.

Work the sweep before the crew leaves, while there are still hands and a truck. Six places hide belongings in almost every rental.

  1. The water heater cupboard, and the shelf above it.
  2. The space over the garage door, and the rafters if the garage has any.
  3. The medicine cabinet, and the back of the vanity drawer.
  4. The outdoor closet, the patio storage bench and the side yard.
  5. The top shelf of every closet, which sits above eye level for most people.
  6. The mailbox, plus the parcel locker code you are about to lose access to.

Then close the apartment out properly. Photograph every room once it is empty, including the floors and the corners. Read the gas, water and electricity meters, and note the numbers somewhere you will find them again. Hand back every key, fob, garage remote and mail key the building issued, because a missing fob is a genuine charge in most places. File the USPS change of address a week early rather than on the day, and give your landlord a forwarding address in writing. A forwarding address is the address your landlord mails the deposit and the itemized statement to, and a missing one is a common reason people wait months for their money.

Booking the move-out

Book the notice date and the crew in the same week, and the rest of this plan has room in it. Our local moving crews run seven days a week, 8am to 8pm, from $119/hr for two movers with a 24-foot truck and $40/hr for each additional mover. California Double Drive Time counts the drive between your two addresses twice in the hourly arithmetic on any hourly move, and it belongs in the quote rather than on the invoice.

We write the estimate before anyone lifts a box, and that written figure caps the bill. There is no deposit on standard bookings; same-day and last-minute bookings may require a deposit, confirmed with your quote. What actually moves the number is on our moving costs page.

For a written estimate built around your own notice date, call (818) 391-8215 or send us both addresses. AG Moving&Storage is family-owned, licensed under USDOT 3610341 · CAL-T192465 · CA 602741 · MC 1525501, and more about the company is on the site. We would always rather hear about the narrow street before move day than on it.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I book movers for a move-out?

One to two weeks is usually enough, and two to four weeks for a larger home or a peak-season date. Month-end books out first everywhere in Los Angeles and Orange County, because most leases turn over on the first, so give yourself the longer window if your date is the last Friday or Saturday. If your building reserves elevators, arrange the crew and the elevator window on the same afternoon so the two actually match.

Should the movers come before or after the move-out walk-through?

Before, whenever the dates allow it. A walk-through of an empty apartment produces a clear list of what your landlord wants repaired, and you still have days left to handle it. A walk-through around furniture leaves the floor under the couch and the wall behind the wardrobe unexamined, and those are exactly the surfaces that resurface later.

How many boxes do I need for a one-bedroom apartment?

Plan on roughly 25 to 40 cartons for a one-bedroom and 45 to 70 for a two-bedroom, then buy a few more small ones than that. Small boxes run out first, because everything heavy belongs in them. Our crews bring paper, wrap, tape and up to 8 loaner wardrobe boxes with the move, so cartons are usually the only packing material you buy.

Does a moving truck need a parking permit in Los Angeles or Orange County?

In most cities in the region, no, because a truck actively loading at the address beside it is already allowed. Some cities are different, and a few sell temporary signs that hold the curb. Call your city's parking desk, or send us the address and we check it when we quote.

What will movers not load out of an apartment?

Propane tanks, gasoline, paint, pool chemicals, aerosols, open liquids and some houseplants stay with you. Nobody warns you about this until move day, so handle it a week early. Appliances are a separate case: we move them, and we do not disconnect or reconnect them.
