Huntington Beach is one of the few cities where the truck itself needs paperwork. The municipal code bars motor vehicles over 22 feet long from parking on a public highway, and our standard truck is 24 feet, so you arrange the permit before the date, not on it. Estimates are free, online or at (818) 391-8215, seven days a week, 8am to 8pm. The written figure caps your bill.

Why a Huntington Beach Move Needs a Permit Booked in Advance

Huntington Beach Municipal Code 10.44.060 prohibits parking or leaving standing any motor vehicle over 22 feet long or 84 inches wide on a public highway or alleyway. Section 10.44.065(A) provides the way through: an oversized vehicle may park for loading or unloading where a permit has been issued in advance by the Police Chief, not to exceed 24 hours, no more than 12 such periods in a calendar month and no more than three days consecutively, limited to the area in front of the residence being loaded or unloaded.

"In advance" is the operative phrase, and it is why we ask for your address early. You apply through the city's permit portal or in person at the police department. The portal verifies residence from a City of Huntington Beach water bill account; without one, proof goes in person during traffic business hours, Monday to Thursday 8am to 4pm, with government-issued ID, vehicle registration and a current utility bill (City of Huntington Beach, Oversized Vehicle Parking Permits, 2026). That makes it the resident's paperwork rather than the mover's. Worth knowing separately: street-sweeping parking violations carry a $68 fine, and the city offers a $36 exemption for building-permit work but none for moving (City of Huntington Beach, 2026).

The 72-Hour Rule, and the One Exemption That Helps

The 72-hour rule comes from Huntington Beach Municipal Code 10.40.060, which bars any vehicle from being parked, stored or left standing on a street or alley for more than 72 consecutive hours. On a same-day move that is academic; on a staged job across two days it is the rule that decides whether a trailer can wait.

One exemption is worth knowing: HBMC 10.44.065(E) allows oversized vehicles on public streets in commercial and industrial districts between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. For an office move off a commercial frontage that removes the advance-permit problem entirely, which is why we ask about the destination's zoning before quoting.

What a Huntington Beach Move Includes

In Huntington Beach, local moving covers wrap, load, drive, unload and placement, with packing services optional at the same hourly structure. Between homes we can pick up, store and redeliver; we hold your goods in leased space our crew handles, never a unit you visit. Piano, pool table, hot tub, safe and appliance moves happen inside a full move only.

Huntington Beach sits on the Orange County coast alongside Costa Mesa and Garden Grove, with crews starting from our base in Norwalk. The moving costs guide sets out every factor behind an estimate.

Alongside the permit, the numbers: two movers with a 24-foot truck is the standard crew, three or four for larger homes, the crew that suits the home is priced into the free written estimate, California Double Drive Time applies over 10 miles, and that figure caps what you pay. We cover moves within Huntington Beach and out to anywhere in our service area.

Frequently asked questions

What are red flags with movers?

Four show up again and again: no licence number you can verify, a verbal-only quote, a large cash deposit demanded before move day, and vague answers about how drive time is billed. A fifth worth adding in Huntington Beach specifically, a mover who has not mentioned that vehicles over 22 feet need an advance permit from the Police Chief to park for loading has probably not planned your truck spot at all.

What is the minimum charge for 2 men and a truck?

We quote rather than publish a minimum, because the honest number depends on volume, access and drive distance. What we can tell you is the structure: two movers with a 24-foot truck is the baseline crew, California Double Drive Time applies over 10 miles, and the written estimate caps what you pay. Call (818) 391-8215 and you will get a real figure for your address rather than a headline rate.

Do you tip movers when they load or unload?

If you are tipping, once at the end of the job is normal, most local moves are the same crew loading and unloading, so there is no need to tip twice. On a two-day job or where a different crew unloads, people often split it. Tipping is optional either way and we never add it to an invoice; the customary range is 15-30% (AG Moving&Storage guidance, 2026) of the total.

Do movers expect a tip?

No. It is genuinely optional and no crew of ours will treat you differently without one. When customers do tip, the customary range is 15-30% (AG Moving&Storage guidance, 2026) of the job, given to the crew directly at the end. Practical help matters too, a cleared path, a legal spot for a 24-foot truck, and an accurate description of stairs or elevator access at quote time.

How much should I budget for moving expenses?

Budget for more than the crew. The moving bill itself is hourly, quoted first and capped in writing, but a Huntington Beach move also carries boxes and materials, a possible advance oversized-vehicle permit for a truck over 22 feet, time off work, and the deposit or cleaning charge at whichever end you are leaving. Get the moving estimate in writing early, then add the rest around it rather than discovering them in the last week.
