Moving Costs

Moving costs are mostly a trust problem: the number you see advertised is rarely the number on the final bill. This page lays out how AG Moving&Storage actually prices a move, factor by factor, and why the honest answer to "how much" is a personal quote with a cap on it. Estimates are free, online or by phone at (818) 391-8215.

Sealed and ready: tell us what moves

How Our Moving Prices Work

Moving prices at AG Moving&Storage work one way: hourly or flat fee, quote-first. You tell us the homes, the furniture and the access; we put a figure in writing for free; that figure caps your bill. We do not publish price ranges, because a range wide enough to be honest is too wide to be useful.

The structure underneath is public. The baseline crew is 2 movers with a 24-ft truck starting from $119 an hour, with 3-4 movers on larger homes. Each mover past the baseline adds $40 per hour. Furniture delivery and labor-only jobs bill at the same hourly rate as moving jobs.

What is the hourly rate for movers in California?

California sets no standard hourly rate for movers; each licensed company builds its own, so comparing structures matters more than comparing teasers. Our structure: crew size times hours, quote-first, materials included, starting from $119 an hour for a 2-mover crew and a 24-ft truck, with $40 per hour for each additional mover past that baseline.

The one statewide constant is California Double Drive Time: on moves over 10 miles, the drive between your old and new address counts double in the hourly math. Any California mover quoting an over-10-mile move without mentioning it is saving that news for the bill.

What Changes the Price of a Move

The price of a move changes with five factors: how much you own, how many movers the job needs, how hard the access is at each end, whether we pack as well as move, and how far the truck drives. Hours are the currency; each factor spends them or saves them.

A third-floor walkup costs more hours than a driveway. A packed-ahead home loads faster than one packed while the clock runs. None of this is a surcharge list; it is what the free estimate measures before the price goes in writing.

What are the hidden costs of 2 hour movers?

Hidden costs are the business model behind most rock-bottom two-hour offers: materials by the roll, stair fees, long-carry fees, fuel charges and drive time that surfaces after loading. The teaser rate buys the booking; the additions buy the profit.

We price the other way. Wrap, tape, thick blankets, door shields, floor runners, speed-pack boxes and up to 8 loaner wardrobe boxes come included at no extra cost. Access questions get asked at quote time. And the written estimate is a cap, so late surprises are structurally impossible.

How much should a long-distance move cost?

A long-distance move within California prices on three things: distance, inventory and crew hours at each end. We run long-distance jobs across the state, from Southern California up the coast or inland, always in-state, and always through the same free written estimate as a local job.

Distance changes the day, not the honesty of the number. California Double Drive Time applies past 10 miles, the quote covers both ends of the route, and the figure you approve is the most you will pay. For the service itself, see our long-distance moving in California page.

Packing and Storage Costs

Packing costs follow the same hourly, quote-first structure as moving: crew size times hours, with the paper, wrap, tape and boxes included rather than itemized. Book it with the move or as its own visit; the free estimate tells you which makes sense for your home.

Storage with us is crew-handled, priced with the move: we pick up, store and redeliver. Short term or long term, with climate-controlled space available, it goes on the same written quote as the move it belongs to, so the gap between homes has one price instead of three.

Deposits, Reschedules and the Estimate Cap

The estimate cap is the piece of our pricing everything else leans on: you will not pay more than the original written estimate. If the job runs long, the number stands.

Deposits and changes follow the same plain rules. No deposit on standard bookings. Same-day and last-minute bookings may require a deposit, confirmed with your quote. Standard bookings also reschedule free. Plans move; the price does not.

Is $100 a good tip for movers?

Tipping movers is welcome and entirely optional; no part of our quote assumes it. Our guidance, when customers ask, is 15-30% of the job total (AG Moving&Storage guidance, 2026), split across the crew.

Against that guidance, $100 reads as generous on a short local job and proportionate on a long day. Judge it by the work: careful wrapping, clean floors, furniture reassembled where you pointed.

Get Your Exact Price: Free Estimates Online or by Phone

Your exact price comes from a free estimate, online through the quote form or by phone at (818) 391-8215, seven days a week, 8am to 8pm. Describe both addresses, the rooms and anything oversized, and the figure comes back in writing.

That written figure is the whole promise: hourly quote-first pricing, materials included, California Double Drive Time declared up front, and a cap the final bill cannot pass. The same structure covers local moves, long-distance within California, furniture delivery and labor-only crews.

Frequently asked questions

How much do local movers typically cost?

Local movers typically price by the hour, and the honest total depends on crew size, hours and access, which is why we quote instead of publishing ranges. Our structure: 2 movers and a 24-ft truck as baseline, $40 per hour per extra mover, materials included, free written estimate as the cap.

What is the cheapest day for movers?

A weekday in the middle of the month is generally the calmest, cheapest time to book movers anywhere, because leases and escrows pile up at month-end. Our rate structure does not change by the day, seven days a week, so what a quiet day really buys you is schedule room and easier building access.

How much to pay 1 move for 3 hours?

A single mover for three hours is not how we staff a job: our baseline crew is 2 movers with a 24-ft truck, because moving safely takes two sets of hands. For a small three-hour job, ask for a free labor-only or small-move estimate at (818) 391-8215; the written figure caps what you pay.

How much does it cost to move 50 miles away?

A 50-mile move within California prices on inventory, access and crew hours, with California Double Drive Time applying since the route is over 10 miles: the drive between addresses counts double in the hourly math. The free written estimate covers the whole route and caps the bill.

How much does it cost for a packing service?

Packing prices hourly and quote-first, like every job we run: crew size times hours, with paper, wrap, tape, speed-pack boxes and loaner wardrobe boxes included at no extra cost. The free estimate tells you whether your home is a morning or a full day, before anyone opens a carton.

How much does it cost to store furniture with a moving company?

Storing furniture with us is quoted as part of the move, not as a separate rental: we pick up, store and redeliver, short or long term, with climate-controlled space available. One written estimate covers the move out, the storage stretch and the redelivery.
