What a Local Move Costs in LA and Orange County, and What Moves the Number

How much does a local move cost in Los Angeles and Orange County? The work is billed by the hour, so the honest answer is the crew rate multiplied by the hours the job takes. Our baseline is two movers with a 24-ft truck from $119/hr, plus $40/hr for every additional mover. The rate is the half you compare between companies, and the hours are the half you can actually change. This page is about the hours, and it is written for somebody collecting three quotes this week. Our moving costs page explains the structure underneath those figures, and the local moving page describes the day itself. To skip ahead and get a personal figure, call (818) 391-8215.

How much does a local move cost: rate times hours

A local move costs the crew rate multiplied by the hours, and only one of those two numbers is genuinely worth shopping around. Crew size determines the rate: our baseline of two movers and the truck becomes three or four people on a larger home, at $40/hr for each mover past the pair.

An additional mover is not simply a bigger number on the invoice. For example, on a two-bedroom apartment with a long carry, a third pair of hands can remove enough hours that the higher rate produces the lower total. Ask for a quote at both crew sizes, then compare totals rather than hourly figures.

A minimum charge is the block of hours a company bills whether or not the work fills them. That makes minimums the most common reason a cheap-looking hourly rate loses on the total. Ask everybody on your list what theirs is, and get it in writing. We do not publish one.

A second rule sits outside company policy altogether. On an hourly move, California counts the drive between your two addresses twice in the hourly arithmetic. That is a state requirement rather than an invention of ours, and double drive time covers how it lands on a bill.

Where the hours actually go on move day

The hours on a move day divide into five phases, and carrying furniture is only one of them.

  1. Setup. The walkthrough, door shields, floor runners and the ramp coming down take the first 20 to 30 minutes. None of that shrinks because your home is small.
  2. Disassembly. Bed frames come apart, table legs come off, mirrors leave dressers and brackets leave walls. A dining table is quick; a bunk bed, a treadmill or a wall-mounted television is not.
  3. Loading. This is the phase everybody pictures, and it scales with the article count and the length of the carry.
  4. Driving. Drive time is measured in minutes rather than miles, which is why an 8am departure and a 3pm departure are different jobs between identical addresses.
  5. Unloading and placing. Furniture goes where you point, beds are reassembled, and the blankets come off before the crew leaves.

Staging is moving your sealed cartons into one room near the door before the crew arrives, and it is the cheapest hour you will ever buy. It costs a Saturday evening rather than two movers on the clock.

Packing is the lever you control

Packing changes the number more than anything else available to you, because a carton that is not closed when we arrive gets closed on your dime. Work backwards from move day. The garage, the closets, the books and the wall decorations go first, since nobody misses them, and the kitchen follows two days out. One carton of pajamas, chargers and coffee stays open until the final morning.

Buy cartons in three sizes and no more. U-Haul publishes the dimensions and cubic feet of the standard set, and most other brands sit within an inch of those measurements. Small cartons take anything dense, medium cartons take the kitchen, and large cartons take bedding and light bulky items.

Seven rules prevent most transit damage:

If that reads like a second job, it is one. Our packing services run on the same hourly clock as the move, quoted in advance and inside the same capped figure.

Access is what makes one address cost more than another

Access is the walk between the truck and your door, and it separates two otherwise identical households faster than any rate card. Count the stairs, measure the carry and check the elevator, then repeat at the other end.

The geography around here is not uniform. Long Beach is full of pre-war walk-ups where the stairwell decides the length of the day. Hillside streets across Los Angeles regularly leave the truck around the corner from the door. Gated communities in Irvine want a gate code and a guard check-in, and plenty of associations close their move-in window at 5pm. Torrance and Downey, by contrast, are mostly driveway moves.

Some cities want a permit for the truck and most do not. Call your city's parking desk, or send us the address and we will check it while we quote. Two examples of what turns up. Pasadena runs a moving vehicle permit that exempts vehicles of 25 feet and under. Irvine takes a parking variance request through its police department, several business days ahead. Our guide to parking a moving truck covers the rest of the region.

What we bring and what you buy

We bring the protection and you buy the cartons, and understanding the split stops people paying twice. Included at no extra cost: unlimited wrap and tape, thick moving blankets, door shields, floor runners, ramps and straps, speed-pack boxes, and up to eight loaner wardrobe boxes.

A blanket goes onto wood before any film does, because film against a finish traps moisture. That matters on anything wrapped overnight or going into storage.

Your own shopping list is short. Cartons in the three sizes, a roll of tape for every 15 boxes, a marker, and a bundle of packing paper. Add a mattress bag if the mattress is newer than the sofa.

What goes wrong, and how to stop it

Most of what goes wrong on move day was visible a week earlier. Consider the five we see most often, each with the correction that removes it.

  1. The kitchen is still full. Pack it two days out and eat off paper plates until the truck arrives.
  2. The elevator is unreserved, or the building wants a certificate of insurance. Ask the manager now, because both are routine requests with lead times.
  3. There is nowhere for the truck. Walk your block, read the street sweeping sign, and tell us what you find so the crew can plan around it.
  4. Hardware is in five different places. One bag for each item, one carton for all the bags, and that carton travels with you.
  5. Loose items everywhere. Anything not in a carton costs more time to move than anything in one, so buy 10 cartons more than you expect and return the spares.

What to send us so the figure is real

Five answers make a written figure real, and none of them takes long to send.

  1. The large articles, counted: sofas, beds by size, appliances, desks and the dining table. A photograph of each room works just as well.
  2. Roughly how many cartons exist today, and how many will exist by move day.
  3. Stairs, elevators and the distance from the curb, at both addresses.
  4. The date, and whether it is fixed or carries a week of slack around it.
  5. Anything heavy or awkward, so the crew and the equipment are correct the first time. A piano, a safe or a large appliance travels as part of a full move, not as a booking of its own.

Send those and the estimate stops being a range. Call (818) 391-8215 or tell us about the move for a written figure that caps your bill. There is no deposit on standard bookings; same-day and last-minute bookings may require one, confirmed with your quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a local move cost in Los Angeles or Orange County?

It is the crew rate multiplied by the hours the job takes. Our baseline is two movers and a 24-ft truck from $119/hr, with $40/hr for each mover past that pair, and the written estimate caps what you pay. The rate is what you compare between companies. The hours are what you can actually change, and they come from how much you own, how much of it is boxed before the crew arrives, and how far the walk is at each end.

How long does a local move take?

A studio or a one-bedroom usually fills a half day, and a three-bedroom house usually fills a full one. Nobody can narrow that from a phone call alone, because the article count and the access at both ends decide it. The same home packed and stacked the night before loads far faster than one being packed while the crew stands there.

Do movers charge extra for stairs or a long walk from the truck?

Not as a separate fee on our hourly moving jobs. Stairs and a long carry cost you time instead, which is why access is the thing we ask about hardest when we quote. A third-floor walk-up with a 200-foot carry is a different day from a driveway, and we would rather put those hours in the estimate than discover them at 8am.

Is there a minimum number of hours on a small move?

Ask every company you call, because minimums vary from one company to the next. A low hourly rate with a four-hour minimum can easily beat a higher rate with none, and reading the two figures separately is how people pick the wrong quote. We do not publish a minimum, and the hours we quote sit inside a written estimate that caps your bill.
